What If I Want To Be Someone I’m Not Prepared To Be?

17 August 2023

“Change will lead to insight far more often than insight will lead to change.”

At a social event, a gentleman (let’s call him Matt) approached me to say he was interested to try hypnotherapy. Nothing upsetting or traumatic but he just wanted to connect better with his own inner self. Matt has a loving family, a wife whom he loves dearly and two beautiful children. But then, he asked me “What if during hypnotherapy I realize I actually want to be a loner and travel around the world? Am I going to leave my beautiful family behind?”

Everything has its own time and place, including the emergence of the knowledge of your inner self. When we have the intent to pursue our inner self, one very crucial element is the eagerness and readiness to change. And by change, it also includes the consequences and that’s important to note. We are always encouraged to connect with our own inner self but that doesn’t mean being self-centered or self-sacrificing. We need to be considerate and communicate with our loved ones, take accountability and apologize if appropriate. We all want to live our lives to the fullest, yet we should also protect our relationships by being understanding and thoughtful. Deal with our life changes gracefully with respect to others and to yourself.

As for Matt, he called me again a month later when he felt he was ready. He is still happily married with two loving children.
